Five Clios for Runaway Train 25 and the Center for Missing and Exploited Children
By: John Matejczyk

Every now and then in advertising we get the chance to make a real and lasting difference. It’s never easy, and we can never do it alone. At the heart of it is creativity, and it’s surrounded by collaboration, perseverance, and a whole bunch of other overused words.

This past May, along with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) and many incredible partners, we launched RunawayTrain25. It recreates the famous Soul Asylum music video, 25 years later, using geo-location to help find missing children. So far, we’ve helped reunite four missing kids with their families.

Last week, the Clio Awards honored it with 5 statues, across music, film, and technology.

It was a herculean undertaking. We’ve been pushing the project uphill for over three years. The partners who jumped in to help are many and significant, across many different industries. Film, technology, music, entertainment, media. Below is as complete a list as we can put together for those who put in major contributions of their time and talent. Truly, thank you.

We got a lot of yeses. From Dave Pirner of Soul Asylum, the complicated world of music legalities, and all the way through to a whole host of production and technology partners.

We got a lot of nos. (Hence the three years.) Funding anyone?

Gavin Portnoy, NCMEC VP, confided in us when we were together on the production that, when he got our call three years ago, his boss said, “nothing will ever come of it.”

When I reflect on what a herculean endeavor it was, though, I can’t help but think about what an extraordinarily more herculean project NCMEC itself is. This is an organization that was founded by John and Reve Walsh after they had nowhere to turn when their son was abducted.

Since then, they’ve been behind the missing posters, a national database, call centers, Amber Alerts, the milk carton campaign, Runaway Train, and many more.

If anyone deserves creative recognition for decades of innovation for good, it’s these guys. Let’s give them retroactive gold awards at every creative show we know.
