Instagram Tinkers with Likes on Posts

If you couldn’t see the total number of Likes on an Instagram post, would you still be tempted to double tap it?
 
That’s an experiment that social platform Instagram is currently testing right now in Canada. Instagram previously redesigned users’ profiles in late 2018 to deemphasize follower count, according to the app’s head of product, Adam Mosseri, so removing ‘likes’ is a continuation of Instagram’s overall goal of making time on the app less of a popularity contest and more about self-expression.
 
For influencers who rely on the platform to score partnerships and monetize their identities, the news came as a huge shock. Likes have come a crucial form of currency for many users but have also contributed to negative impacts on our mental wellbeing.
 
Instagram has confirmed that creators will still be able to see like count, but it will be hidden from viewers as they scroll through their feed. If this experiment becomes an official change, will Comments become the new Likes? Whatever the answer might be, Instagram is hoping to change a behavior it ultimately helped create.

From Spotify playlists to Amazon shopping lists and VC-backed apps, expect to see astrology show up in more places as people look to the stars to make sense of the uncertain and chaotic world we live in.

This Year, 50%+ US Social Media Users will be Mobile-Only

A new study by e-marketer shows that more than half of social media users in the United States will access social networks with only their mobile devices in 2019:

"As smartphone use grows, fewer Americans are using desktops and laptops to access the internet. The number of US smartphone users will reach 232.8 million in 2019, surpassing desktop/laptop internet users (228.9 million) for the first time. And the number of those who access the internet exclusively on a mobile device will grow by 10.6%, reaching 55.1 million users.” - e-marketer, 2019

Social has been mobile dominated for years, with networks like Instagram and Snapchat, but the increasing shift with Facebook and Twitter should tell marketers that mobile-first social strategies are imperative in order to drive the level of efficiency necessary for business impact. 
According to a study, people typically touch their phones 2,617 times per day.
